What is a prosthodontist? What the qualification tells you

What specialist qualifications do and do not mean, and how to check them.

This general information is intended to help you prepare for a dental consultation. Decisions about your treatment require a clinical examination and appropriate tests.

Dentistry has legally recognized specialties, including prosthodontics. Specialist status is a verifiable fact, but it is useful to distinguish what that qualification does and does not indicate.

The specialist system and prosthodontics

South Korea has a specialist system for dentists. After graduating from dental school and obtaining a license, dentists complete an internship and residency at a training hospital and pass an examination before their specialist qualification is recognized by the Minister of Health and Welfare.

Prosthodontics is one of these specialties. It covers replacing missing teeth and restoring damaged teeth, including crowns, bridges, dentures, and restorations placed on implants.

Specialist qualifications are recognized under requirements and procedures set out in law. You can ask the clinic to confirm the treating dentist's specialty and how the qualification appears on the specialist certificate.

What the qualification does not tell you

It is also useful to understand what specialist status does not indicate.

Specialist status indicates that a dentist has completed the prescribed training; it does not guarantee an individual's treatment outcome. Having or not having this qualification does not establish the superiority of care, and dentists provide a range of treatments within the scope of their license.

Specialist status is one piece of information you can verify. By itself, it does not indicate treatment outcomes or establish that one clinic is better than another.

Distinguishing between titles

Some titles look similar but need to be distinguished. They are awarded by different bodies.

TitleMeaning
Specialist in ○○A specialist qualification recognized by Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare
Full member of the ○○ societyMembership of a professional society
○○ society-certified dentistA title awarded by a professional society under its own criteria
Adjunct professor or clinical professor at a universityA position held at a university
Completed ○○ trainingCompletion of an educational course

Society membership, society certification, university positions, and completed training may be listed as experience if accurate, but they are distinct from a legally recognized specialist qualification. Society-certified dentists and legally recognized specialists receive their titles from different bodies. A title not recognized in law also cannot be presented as a specialist qualification.

How to check

You can check qualifications listed by a clinic in the following ways.

  • Specialty and qualification details — Ask the clinic to confirm the treating dentist's specialty and the wording on the specialist certificate
  • Information displayed at the clinic — Medical institutions are required to display the license type and name of the clinicians providing care
  • Ask during the consultation — You can ask which type of qualification the title represents

Questions to ask during a consultation

"Are you a specialist recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, or certified by a professional society?"

When this information may be relevant

There are several specialties, so the key question is whether the specialty relates to the treatment you are considering.

  • Restorations for missing teeth, dentures, and restorations on implants → Prosthodontics
  • Gums and the tissues around implants → Periodontics
  • Root canal treatment → Conservative dentistry
  • Moving teeth → Orthodontics
  • Tooth extraction and jawbone surgery → Oral and maxillofacial surgery

A clinic commonly provides several types of treatment, so you do not necessarily need to seek a clinic with a specialist. However, specialty information may be useful when considering complex treatment.

A listed area of practice is different

A sign reading, for example, '○○ Dental Clinic — Services: Prosthodontics' identifies a stated area of practice. It means that the clinic provides that type of treatment and is separate from whether a dentist holds a specialist qualification.

A clinic sign alone should not be taken as confirmation that a specialist practices there.

This article provides general information about South Korea's dental specialist system. A specialist qualification indicates the scope of training; it does not guarantee an individual's treatment outcome. The treatment needed and its timing may vary with examination results and individual oral health. A specific diagnosis and treatment plan are determined through an in-person examination and tests by a clinician. This article does not recommend any particular clinic or clinician.
