Search basics
Will adding an FAQ make AI more likely to cite your site?
Distinguish reader-facing questions and answers from structured data, and write and maintain FAQs in light of current Google guidance.
FAQs make readers’ questions easier to find
An FAQ brings frequently asked questions and their answers together. When readers struggle to find visit preparation or cost-checking guidance in a long page, using questions as headings makes relevant sections easier to reach.
This reading benefit is separate from any effect on AI citations. Having questions and answers does not, by itself, make a page a recommendation or a selected source in search.
Check current Google Search policy first
As checked on September 6, 2026, Google FAQ rich results have not appeared in Search since May 7, 2026, and their documentation was removed on June 15. The restriction announced in 2023 to well-known, authoritative government and health websites is historical guidance.
Special structured data is not required for Google AI Overviews or AI Mode either. Adding FAQPage markup therefore cannot come with a promise that questions will expand in search results or that AI will cite them.
Describe the situation, not just a broad topic
The following are fictional editing examples, not consultation records. Including the conditions that affect an answer also helps the reviewer understand what needs to be checked.
- “Do you offer evening appointments?” → “How can I check evening treatment availability and the registration cutoff?”
- “How much are dental implants?” → “How can I check whether the estimate includes the restoration and additional procedures?”
Keep conditions after the short answer
Answer the question directly in the first sentence, then explain applicable conditions and where to confirm them. Instead of ending unconditionally with “Yes,” retain details that may vary by day or examination results.
If the answer becomes long, keep its essentials in the FAQ and link to the full explanation. Do not remove important risks or individual differences just to shorten it. Place relevant sources where readers can check the information.
Compare markup with the actual body text
If you maintain structured data separately, check that it matches content readers can access on the page. Do not add treatment services, qualifications, or opening hours to code when they are absent from the body.
Connect editorial and development work so that the developer knows when an answer changes. Check for markup left behind after text is removed, or an old coded answer remaining after the visible text has been updated.
Look at unresolved questions, not item counts
During ongoing maintenance, examine questions that are hard to find and answers that keep needing clarification, rather than the number of FAQ entries. Merge similar questions and separate those that require different judgments.
When operational information changes, check linked guidance too. Record the owner and verification date without claiming a clinical review that did not take place. An FAQ is guidance to maintain, not a one-off code installation.
